She then overhears him and falls down the stairs, but picks herself up and realizes she can now remember everything. Once she goes upstairs we discover the husband had been trying to murder the wife, but she survived with the amnesia. A woman is discussing her current bout of amnesia with her husband, who seems kind and understanding. They fade in on a typical soap living room. In fact, the most memorable situation I can recall occurs in the opening three or four minutes of the series, and has little to do with the "real" show. I did not watch enough of the series to recall many of the plotlines. In addition to Kelly Rutherford (whose character was scandalously having an affair with her professor), it was the first time I'd seen Kristoff St John (who, after the demise of Generations, went to work on Y&R to become even more famous). They had the usual core families with rivalries and young lovers, secrets from the past, etc. Some would say it was "too normal" in a situation where they might have been wise to do more to draw attention to itself (like its successors, Sunset Beach and especially Passions). It did not help that a lot of stations aired hour-long news programs at the noon hour, and could simply choose not to air Generations at all. Everyone knew from the get-go that Generations had a tough road ahead of them, given how timeslot-competitor Y&R had recently taken the top spot in the Nielsens and NBC was firmly in third place as a network.
